THE RE-ELECTION OF PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA

The American people have spoken loudly, and they have re-elected Barack Obama as President of the United States. The world watched anxiously on the night of Tuesday November 6, 2012, to see if President Obama would win re-election. As the night progressed, and the votes poured in we all watched all of the states weigh in on their choice for President, with the exception of Florida, but that’s a conversation for another day. It was a great moment if you were a Democrat, but a bitter pill to swallow if you were a Republican. The re-election of President Obama brought a realization to some people in this country, which is that America is changing. The days of white America being the majority that decides elections is a thing of the past. America learned minorities comprised of African-Americans, Hispanics, and Asians are starting to show their political clout. These minority groups showed up to the polls in record numbers to cast their vote and let America know that they are here to stay and their issues need to be recognized and addressed. The Republican party in recent years, has not been a party to sympathize or even acknowledge the issues affecting minorities in this country, but this election has forced Republicans to re-visit the issues affecting minorities if they ever plan to win another Presidential election.

In this election I think minorities chose President Obama because he presented himself to be a President that would attempt to take on the various issues that affect their lives such as healthcare, women’s rights, immigration, and creating jobs. I believe that Mitt Romney did not make a good enough case to show that he was sincere about these issues, and in some cases was totally against some of the major issues that affect minorities and women in this country. Mitt Romney and the Republicans now know that it is critical for the party to open up the lines of communication and begin a dialogue with the minorities in this country that are patriotic Americans just as they are. Minorities love America and the freedoms that it provides. I think it is a misconception to believe that minorities are lazy and always looking for handouts. The majority of the minorities I know are hard-working people that love their families and love their country. Every race has those that cause us embarrassment by their behavior, but you can’t paint a whole race of people with a broad brush. After the media announced that President Obama won the election, there were cheers from his supporters, but it was disheartening to hear the many derogatory comments by some in the media, celebrities and some Republicans across America. I can understand the disappointment of the Mitt Romney supporters, but use this moment in America’s history to make America better. We all are now on the same page realizing that we are living in a divided country, but now is the best time to make significant changes to the way we feel about one another. We cannot make progress in this country if we continue to perpetuate hate and divisiveness.

The re-election of President Obama gives me hope that this is a teachable moment for America. President Obama’s re-election confirms that this country is becoming a more diverse nation, and with that diversity attitudes in this country need to change. We have to be willing to reach deep inside of ourselves to overcome the many deep seated attitudes that has brought us to become the divided nation we have now become. I think this election has been a wake-up call for all Americans. America needs to set an example for the rest of the world, and show the world that we are not a divided country, but a country that is united in our belief that we want to be a strong, progressive and accepting nation that cares for all of the people of this country. My prayer is that President Obama can start the wheels of change in this country and lead this country to peace and prosperity.
