CHICAGO GUN VIOLENCE LEAVES 45 PEOPLE SHOT OVER EASTER WEEKEND

This past Easter weekend 45 people were shot in the City of Chicago, with nine of those being killed.  Six children were among those that were wounded. Some of these children were playing in a playground when they were gunned down. The violence in Chicago has been in the headlines for the last few years, but this recent rash of violence should make people start to see how devastating this is for the City of Chicago and the nation as a whole. This kind of violence should not be happening in an American City. Some have begun calling Chicago “Chiraq” because of the sheer number of killings in that city on a daily basis.

The Chicago Police Superintendent, Garry McCarthy, has stated that he feels the main problem causing this violence is that there are not stiffer gun laws. McCarthy has explained that although the police arrest people and confiscate guns, those same people are shortly back on the street. To add to this dilemma, the Illinois legislature passed a law last year that allows people to carry concealed weapons. Some may say that with all of the violence, residents should be able to carry a weapon for their own protection, and that is definitely a valid argument. It is easy for people to say this law is just compounding the problem, but people are afraid and the natural reaction is to want to protect themselves and their families. This recent incident of violence has gotten a lot of officials talking about what is causing this violence and what can be done about it.

Some people attribute the violence to gangs. According to the Chicago Crime Commission, there are over 600 gangs in Chicago with approximately 70,000 people affiliated with these gangs. With so many gangs in Chicago, this could very well be the reason for so much violence. The question is how do you deal with the gang situation? One way is by parents being more aware of what their children are doing and who their children are associating with. The Chicago Police department advises that parents should try to get their children involved in more constructive activities. Chicago also has a curfew for children under age 17, which means they must be home by 10:30 pm on weekdays and 11:30 pm on Friday and Saturday nights.

There is more to this problem than just gangs though. We have to find out why our children feel the need to join these gangs. I can think of a couple of reasons, such as lack of community based programs to give these gang members a better way to spend their time. If these programs were offered, they could give these youth job training, tutoring, and mentors to help them realize that there is a more productive way for them to live their lives. The other problem here is the education system needs more funding and much more parental involvement so these kids can get an education that will transfer into meaningful employment.

There is no quick fix for the violence in Chicago, but as a society we should all be concerned about this problem because it is very sad to see all of these young people being murdered, and watching all of these parents burying their children. This is not just Chicago’s problem, this is the nation’s problem, because one day we could be talking about your city.

UNITED STATES FALLS SHORT ON PAID VACATION TIME FOR WORKERS

4/20/2014

When it comes to paid vacation time, the United States is at the bottom of the list of countries that provide paid time off for their workers. Our workers in this country have very little paid vacation time compared with European countries. Here in the United States there is no law that states an employer has to guarantee you paid vacation time. Many employers do offer paid time off, but there are many American workers who don't have any paid time off. I would think as an employer, you would want to reward your hard working employees by giving them paid time off to spend with their families. It stands to reason that a well rested employee would be much more productive. This could be the reason there is so much job stress and workplace violence. According to the Center for Disease Control, one fourth of employees view their jobs as their number one stressor. The CDC also states that problems at work are more strongly associated with health complaints than are any other life stressor-more so than even financial problems or family problems. People need an outlet for job stress, and that outlet would be more paid time off to get away from the job.

The issue of mandatory paid time off for workers was introduced as a bill in Congress that would have mandated one week of paid leave to American workers, but it never got anywhere with Congress. This is ironic because Congress gets on average about three months recess time a year. We can only hope that one day this issue will be addressed again by our legislators, and maybe the next time they will be successful in getting legislation passed that would mandate a certain amount of paid vacation days for American workers. What do you think?

TODAY IS APRIL 15th - DID YOU FILE YOUR TAXES?

4/15/2014

It seems this day rolls around much too fast this time of year. Today is the deadline for filing your 2013 taxes. Most people who were owed a refund have filed already, but there are some procrastinators out there who have still not filed their taxes.  If you are owed a refund, you will not be penalized if you don't file your taxes today, but if you owe the IRS money you better hurry and file your taxes or you will be looking at fines and penalties.

For those of you that owe money to the IRS and you you know you do not have the money to pay what you owe, my suggestion would be to contact the IRS and discuss some sort of payment arrangement. You should still file your taxes, but call the IRS to see what options you have. It is not a good idea to ignore file your taxes because you can't afford to pay them because that will just cost you more money and added stress knowing that you have this tax bill hanging over your head.

It is a good idea to prepare for tax time for next year by keeping and organizing receipts, get a small notebook to keep in your car to keep track of gas and auto expenses, put a small savings aside for unexpected tax expenses. If you receive a Form 1099 , it is especially important for you to keep accurate records and receipts because these tax filers have the potential to be audited more frequently. Another thing I recommend is that at the beginning of tax season next year, order a copy of Publication 17 from the IRS. You can go on the IRS website and it will tell you how you can get a copy. You can also just view Publication 17 on the IRS website. Publication 17 will tell you everything you need to know regarding the filing of your taxes. Publication 17 is a really great tool for those people who prepare their own taxes.  Click the link below to view 2013 Publication 17.

Tax time is stressful for most people, but if you plan, organize and don't procrastinate you can make tax time a lot less stressful.

KANSAS JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER TARGETED BY WHITE SUPREMACIST

4/14/2014

PicturePhoto Source: Flickr: 08KKKfamilyPortrait Author: Image Editor http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/deed.en

A man by the name of Frazier Glenn Cross, an alleged white supremacist, shot five people yesterday at a Jewish Community Center and at the Village Shalom Retirement Community in Overland Park, Kansas. Three of the five people shot were killed. One of those killed was a 14 year old boy.  The case could be labeled a hate-crime, but authorities are still investigating.

This kind of shooting should make people aware that the Jewish and minority communities are still being targeted by hate groups across our country.  I am sure that there will be a lot of people saying that this was an isolated incident, but these hate groups are growing in significant numbers in this country in recent years.  It boggles my mind that someone could carry such hate for the Jewish people that they would take a gun and start killing people randomly.

Frazier Glenn Cross was known to the Southern Poverty Law Center, who said Cross posted several anti-semitic messages on some on-line forums. One of his messages called Jewish people "
swarthy, hairy, bow-legged, beady-eyed, parasitic midgets."  Cross had a history of white supremacy. The Southern Poverty Law Center states that Cross founded a chapter of the Ku Klux Klan in the 1980's called the Carolina Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. This group was forced to shut down because he was sued by the SPLC for operating a paramilitary organization and intimidating African-Americans. Cross then started another whites supremacist group called the White Patriot Party.

For those of you thinking this is just an isolated incident by a crazed individual with mental problems, you need to think again. This man is crazy and probably has some sort of mental issues, but he is not alone in his thinking. There are white supremacist groups all across the country, armed with guns and ammunition just training and waiting to strike innocent people just because of their beliefs or the color of their skin. The government should be tracking these people and shutting down these groups so that these kinds of acts of violence don't happen. Although this country has come a long way regarding racism, the hate is still out there and is growing everyday.  If you would like to view the map of Active Hate Groups in the United States, click the link below:

                                                        http://www.splcenter.org/get-informed/hate-map

My heart goes out to the families affected by this senseless tragedy, and I hope Frazier Glenn Cross is sent to prison and never allowed the freedom to walk the streets to harm and kill anyone else.

The latest new computer eyewear is Goole Glass which was created by Google X. The first prototype was developed in 2011.  You might be asking exactly what is Google Glass.  Google Glass is a computer that resembles eyewear. There is a touchpad on the side that reveals such things as weather and news. There is also a camera that can take photos and capture 720p HD video.

There are some people already having concerns with privacy issues because of the camera and video capabilities of Google Glass. Some are concerend that people can secretly videotape or take images of non-suspecting people. I think that Google Glass should be no more of an issue with privacy as cell phones are. In today's society, how much privacy do we really have when cameras are just about everywhere. I think my only concern would be how Google Glass could affect your vision.

Google Glass seems like something out of a James Bond movie. It is amazing to me how far we have come with technology. It will be interesting to see if consumers are receptive to Google Glass. Some consumers will get their chance to purchase Google Glass when it is made available on Tuesday April 15, 2014.  There will be a limited supply and the price tag for Google Glass will be $1,500.00. Although the price tag is enough to scare me off, I am sure there are some technology geeks out there that will be the first ones to purchase this new computer.

OBAMACARE - WHAT ABOUT THOSE PEOPLE WHO ARE STILL WITHOUT COVERAGE?

4/10/2014

Picture
The Obama Administration has met their goal and over 7 million people used the healthcare exchange to sign up for medical coverage.  I think it is great to see more Americans covered by health insurance, but what about those people who still uninsured?  The reason some people are left uninsured is because some states have chosen to opt out of expanding Medicaid. There are many people who are unemployed or have very low incomes, but still do not qualify for Medicaid in their states.  These people are left with no health insurance and basically in the same situation they were in before Obamacare came to be.

It seems that the very people Obamacare was supposed to be helping to get medical coverage, are the very people that are still without coverage.  I don't hear anyone talking about what is going to be done for the people that are uninsured in those states that opted out the expansion of Medicaid.  These states have refused government assistance to expand Medicaid, and offer no alternative solutions to get these people that fall into this gap the medical coverage they need.  I think when the U.S. Supreme Court gave these States the option to opt of  out of expanding Medicaid, they should have been made to establish a clear plan as to how they would be getting those people who fall into the gap insured. There seems to be no accountability for these States that chose to not expand Medicaid.

Everyone in this country should be afforded medical coverage and it is an absolute travesty that we still have millions of Americans that are still uninsured because some of the Governors of these States are deciding to play politics with peoples lives.  There was a 32 year old woman in Florida with a heart condition who recently died because she was one of those people who fell into that gap.  How many more people will suffer with medical conditions and possibly die because of their decision to not expand Medicaid in their States?  The Obama Administration should be very proud of the success of the Affordable Care Act, but I hope they continue to push for everyone to be insured and not forget about those people who need medical coverage and are not able to afford it.

THE GEORGE ZIMMERMAN VERDICT - WHO REALLY WON THIS CASE?

7/14/2013

Picture
We watched this case intently from the beginning.  Everyone had an opinion on what they thought happened that night between George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin.  After months of watching all of the news shows and hearing all of the evidence, the verdict has now been revealed. George Zimmerman is NOT GUILTY. There are some who feel that this was a fair verdict because George Zimmerman should never have been charged.  There are others that feel Trayvon Martin was an unarmed teenager that was killed walking home from the store and profiled to be a black teenager looking to burglarize someone. So now that the verdict is known what is the message we can all take with us and who really won this case?

If you are a George Zimmerman supporter, you are ecstatic because in your opinion justice has been served. Your feeling is that Mr. Zimmerman was an innocent man that was railroaded and charged with Trayvon Martin’s murder. If you are a Trayvon Martin supporter, it is a sad day indeed. This verdict confirms the injustice of our judicial system. You feel that black people are never treated fairly in our judicial system and now this verdict gives people permission to shoot and kill black people with no threat of punishment.

This case involved two of the most passionate issues we have in this country, guns and race. The fact that George Zimmerman was walking around with a loaded gun truly disturbed some people. Most people agree that Mr. Zimmerman had a right to carry gun, but it was difficult to understand that he was not the aggressor when he was armed and Travon was not. One good question to consider is would George Zimmerman have ever gotten out his truck if he wasn’t armed with a gun? I would say probably not. If he didn’t have that gun he would have sat in his truck and waited for the Police to arrive. The gun gave him the courage to confront Trayvon which ultimately led to Trayvon’s death. The issue of race was brought into this case because many believe that Trayvon was profiled and followed because he was Black. This is very believable for those in the black community because they have been targeted and punished unfairly for many years. I think with the election of President Obama, many believed that racism in this country was beginning to be a thing of the past, but this case has made many people question how far we really have come.

So who really won in this case? It certainly is not Trayvon Martin’s family and supporters because Trayvon is dead and no one will be charged with his murder and that is a hard pill to swallow. A seventeen year old kid is shot in the heart on his way back from the store for no reason other than George Zimmerman thought Trayvon was up to no good, and felt he should confront Trayvon instead of waiting for law enforcement. Although the verdict was in George Zimmerman’s favor, he is a loser in this verdict also because Mr. Zimmerman will never have peace. He will always have to look over his shoulder and be fearful of someone out to take revenge upon him. That is an awful way to spend the rest of your life. Where will he live? This case was shown all over the world, so where will he really be safe? I guess the real winners in all of this are the defense team. The lawyers on the defense team are now household names and will be forever known as the winners in one of the biggest cases in U.S. history.

I guess if one positive thing came from this case it is that people became more educated about our judicial system and how it works because they followed this case and watched the trial. Hopefully, we all have learned something from this case and going forward we need to work on the issues that divide our country so that we never have another Trayvon Martin case.

Tragedy in Moore, Oklahoma

Today, a devastating tornado hit the town of Moore, Oklahoma, causing death and destruction.  It is total devastation in this town with a school being totally leveled with many children, teachers and administrators trapped inside.  The homes in this town are completely gone.  This tragedy is truly unbelievable and I am sure we will see much more damage in the days ahead.

When these kinds of tragedies happen, we sometimes remove ourselves and feel very sorry for the people affected, but we feel that this could never happen to us.  The reality is, this kind of tragedy can happen to any one of us.  It seems that the weather is becoming more severe over the years.  Severe weather is happening much more frequently, and it seems that it has become much more deadly.  I can't imagine what these people are facing after losing family members and their homes all in one day.  It is unimaginable.  I am writing this blog today to remind everyone that it is so important to treasure every moment in life.  Love your families and friends with all you have because you never know what can happen.  When you look at your family today, be thankful for the gift of life you have been blessed with because the people of Moore, Oklahoma, have lost everything they hold dear.

This town will need the prayers of all of us to help them get through this difficult time.  Take a moment out of your day and think of the people in this town who need your help with rebuilding their lives, and they also need our sincere prayers to get them through to a brighter day.

Should Congress Take A Paycut and Feel the Pain Like the Rest of Us?

3/31/2013

Picture
The Members of Congress have passed the forced budget cuts, and many people in Middle America are either being furloughed or losing their jobs. Even if you are not one of those people, this measure has set the tone for some companies to postpone hiring or laying people off. It is amazing to me that Members of Congress are so willing to sacrifice our salaries, but their salaries cannot be touched. Their salaries will not be affected because of the 27th Amendment, which “prohibits any law that increases or decreases the salary of Members of the Congress from taking effect until the start of the next set of terms of office for Representatives.”  Members of Congress salaries are approximately $174,000.00 per year, with many perks and benefits. So why shouldn’t they take a cut in pay as many of us have had to do?

Congressman, David Loebsack, from Iowa has introduced the bill H.R. 398 on January 23, 2013. H.R. 398 is the Congressional Halt in Pay Increases and Cut Congressional Pay Act. This bill if passed would reduce the rate of pay for Members of Congress by 10% and eliminate automatic pay increases for Member of Congress. This seems like a very good idea because this Congress has been very ineffective, and hasn’t done anything to help get America’s finances back on track. This Congress has blocked ideas and has not been willing to work with President Obama on anything that could have lifted our country out of this financial downturn. It doesn’t seem to me that Members of Congress should be secure in their jobs and continue to receive their cushy salary when many Americans have lost their homes through foreclosure and been furloughed or laid off from their jobs. Many of these Americans have had to take pay cuts so why shouldn’t the Members of Congress feel the pain? I encourage everyone who is reading this blog to sign the petition of Congresswoman, Diane Russell, of Portland, Maine, which supports the H.R. 398 bill.

We need to show the Members of Congress that we are not happy with the job they have done. Their pay should be cut and they should not receive any salary increases. If you would like to sign your name to the petition, click the link below.
